Nuraxi Silk Collection
Our Mexican Raw Silk collection involves time-honored artisanal processes. It begins with a beautiful journey in the mountains of The Sierra Madre Occidental in Oaxaca, where, for five hundred years, the artisans in this village have been cultivating this exquisite textile by feeding their silkworms mulberry tree leaves. The silk is then hand-spun into diaphanous fiber with the ancient technique of silk cultivation passed down for generations. Nearly extinct, this traditional process has been preserved and reinvigorated by younger generations in the last few years, and we are very happy and proud to be a part of supporting their challenge.

Central to the individuality of the raw silk pieces Nuraxi offers are two kinds of cocoons, the native Criollo, and the Bombix Mori, preserved since the Colonial period. The Criollo caterpillar produces a yellow cocoon with silk tones to form a raw texture in tones from light cream to darker brown. The Bombix Mori produces a softer whiter continuous filament. These unique characteristics allow us to play with different textures, thicknesses and shades.

The next step is to wave and natural dye the silk. Most of our pieces are designed and hand waved in our CDMX studio on colonial 8 and 12 shaft looms by a talented urban textile artist. And others are a co-creation of Oaxaca-Zapotec and Chiapas-Tsotsil artisans using the waist loom. We’ve developed a natural dye pantone with regional and traditional herbs, flowers or insects such as cochineal, indigo, mexican tarragon, and purpura snail. Ultimately each unique piece is finished by hand with loving care resulting in exceeding luxury and quality.

The feel of silk matched with its amazing ability to regulate body temperature is unparalleled in cold weather, while its moisture wicking properties keep us dry and comfortable in any climate while naturally repelling mold & mildew. Silk is hypoallergenic, and won't irritate sensitive skin.

Nuraxi’s exclusively offers Peace Silk fabrics made only from cocoons discarded after the silk moth has naturally emerged.
