Gravity & Grace

Ghanian artist, El Anatsui finds a purpose for the discarded and forgotten. In an arduous but communal effort, he directs the weaving of massive fabric like wall hangings from discarded bottle caps. In a three step performance, studio workers in Nsukka weave together the initial blocks, Mr. Anatsui determines the configurations of the small blocks into larger works, and finally whoever installs the finished pieces hangs and drapes the pieces at they please. El Anatsui is currently exhibiting his monumental works of Gravity & Grace at the Brooklyn Museum. One reason to miss NY.
